Composting Tips
Composting is a process which was used in the earlier days, when the technology was not improved. It is a natural process to break down the organic materials for the formation of organic fertilizers. The garbage is used to the optimum extent, to create organic fertilizers. This indirectly reduces the landfill. The organic fertilizers help in growing healthy and nutritional crops.
Procedure for composting:
• You can pile your garbage in the backyard or you can use the commercial composting bins which help in retaining the cleanliness of the surroundings. The compost formation in these bins, are pretty fast when turned regularly.
• For transforming the waste into compost, you are required to pile up the materials that are high in nitrogen ands carbon. All the green materials like hay, grass clippings, seaweed, kitchen waste like vegetable remains and peels, tea bags etc. are high in nitrogen. Similarly, all the brown materials like cardboard, newspaper, dry leaves, straw, saw dust, wood chips are rich in carbon.
• You are required to use the materials like fats, bones, meat, coal ash, dairy products etc for composting.
• The organic materials that are piled up are decomposed by the aerobic bacteria and other microscopic enzymes.
• The compost pile must be damp for the formation of good manure. It need not be soaking in water. If you are living in a hot and dry climate, you can pile your materials in shade so that they remain damp.
• You should keep turning the pile of waste with a fork or spade so that the get compact and air penetrates into them.
• Proper warmth has to be maintained for the formation of compost. In case you are staying in cold countries you can keep the pile in direct sun.
• You can introduce certain additives, activators and worms which speed up the process of composting. These activators contain nitrogen which is very much required for compost formation. If your pile does not contain the needed quantity of green materials, then you can go for the activators.
• You can add agricultural lime and wood ashes to reduce the acidity that is delivered by the waste.
• You can also use red wiggler worms for composting. The compost formed in this process is great. There is a separate method for composting with worms.
The compost, thus formed, can be added to the bedding mixture for the growing plants which are kept in containers, for seedling. It can be used
